The Systems Engineer provides support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Meeting Management Technologies (MMT) team. This position performs engineering, operations research, integration, logistics, acquisition, research and development activities to ensure the MMT processes functions with a high level of proficiency.



Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Interacts with system users to translate their requirements into systems, hardware, and software requirements and design. 


Participates in the development of test strategies.


Solves engineering problems or manages the solution of engineering problems in an assigned functional area.


Assists with managing the CDC’s Envision Videoconference Operations Center.


Maintains the video bridge infrastructure including but not limited to MCU, gatekeeper, border controller and Internet Protocol Integrated Services Digital Network (IP-ISDN) network components, codecs and bridge management hardware/software.


Schedules, monitors, and troubleshoots agency-wide videoconference meetings.


Serves as videoconference network liaison to perform videoconference network infrastructure design, upgrades, and maintenance.


Provides technical assistance to the CDC Global Audio Visual (AV) and Video Teleconferencing (VTC) points of contact.


Identifies and develops project plans to address VTC security, network configuration and endpoint-network Quality of Service (QOS) settings.


Identifies, escalates and resolves videoconference customer and technical infrastructure problems including level II and III incidents.


Provides support to national and global non CDC locations in establishing videoconference connectivity.

Provides technical support to locations experiencing issues with bridge hardware and/or software applications in accordance with SLA metrics.


Assists with establishing and maintaining a maintenance plan strategy in cooperation with federal leadership to centralize and streamline enterprise videoconferencing infrastructure systems.


Maintains system renewal timelines, generates reports, engages third party vendors for replacement of equipment and ensures system continuity.


Integrates emerging web conferencing and desktop videoconferencing technologies with standard videoconferencing platforms.


Maintains MMT equipment inventory and property systems and ensures MMT AV and VTC systems are compliant with CDC security requirements.


Coordinates various phases of work with other functional disciplines and interpret/translate engineering requirements into design characteristics and criteria.


Helps plan, analyze, and evaluate engineering and technical efforts used to define system/subsystem requirements, translates requirements into design criteria, assess alternative design approaches, and develops system specifications.


Helps identify human factors necessary to operate, maintain, support, and control equipment/systems during the basic design and development stages.


Analyzes system/equipment to ensure it is operational when needed.


Helps determine the means to advance projects and evaluates significant modifications to production methods or materials due to changes in requirements, technological advances, or shortcomings in design and/or performance.


Evaluates and recommends procedures and innovative techniques and methods.


Helps manage program risk and recommends steps to mitigate unacceptable risk throughout the life cycle.


Develops, in support of engineering reviews and/or panels, evaluations and technical justifications of feasibility.


Presents briefings and develop technical reports to document progress and results.


Analyzes and studies performance requirements against a wide range of diverse considerations, including safety and human factors, technical risks, functionality, reliability, failure analysis, quality assurance, cost, and environmental impact.


Assists in the evaluation of technology, components, and systems by developing evaluation criteria, performing evaluations, and documents results.


Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.


Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. 


Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.



Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five (5) years of systems engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education / experience. Experienced in Audio Visual Conferencing technologies.



Ability to pass Government and CDC background check for site and system access



Strong knowledge in MS office to include Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other software suites

Demonstrated experience with executing assigned tasks to meet technical objectives

Working knowledge and thorough understanding of testing, analyses and corrective action on systems, networks, hardware and software in a professional audio / video environment

Excellent communication skills 

Solid organizational skills relevant to carrying out day-to-day responsibilities
