  • Overview

    The Network Administrator provides server and system network support for the Air Combat Command (ACC), Communication Support Squadron (CSS), within the United States Air Force (USAF).This position provides daily support, local administration, configuration, and maintenance of voice, video, and data transport and associated routers, switches, voice systems, voice-over-IP, video bridges, information transfer nodes, and communications closet wiring.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

    Infrastructure Systems (Cyber Transport)

    Shares responsibility for voice, video, data transport systems within the confines of the base

    with government technicians (Infrastructure Systems technician).

     

    Operates, maintains and configures routers/switches/voice systems/Voice over IPP)/Video bridges, ITNs, communication closet wiring.

     

    Maintains Network Encryption devices intended to apply encryption internal to the base

    campus—i.e., TACLANEs providing local Secure Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet)

    connectivity.

     

    Performs internal base campus network fault notification and management.

     

    Performs DNS/DHCP IP administration; installs and performs administration on base campus

    less network devices.

     

    Performs network management planning; performs active network monitoring.

     

    Installs and perform administration on base network infrastructure.

     

    Performs router/switch preventive maintenance inspections to include IOS upgrades. 

    Programs and administer telephony switches; to include VoIP.

     

    Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN) Infrastructure

    Upgrades, integrates, installs, configures, tests, maintains, dismantles and turns in data and video

    communication networks—both hardware and software.  Required communication capability

    includes the understanding of the interconnectivity of wireless, fiber optics, coaxial and copper

    twisted pair) broadband and baseband.

     

    Follow applicable environmental energy efficiency guidelines when purchasing new

    hardware or electronic equipment.

     

    Network Infrastructure Support

    Provided network infrastructure support (technical control) including

    o Point-to-point installs and maintenance.

    o Long-haul circuit management and operations.

    o Loading circuit encryption equipment.

    o Infrastructure network equipment.

     

    Net Integration 

    Operates, maintains and configures voice, data and video routers, hubs, switches, ITNs and

    bridges to interface with commercial, DoD and coalition networks.  

     

    Controls and configures internal routers/switches and network infrastructure devices.

     

    Net Encryption 

    Operates and configures point-to-point, VPN and bulk encryption for network and long haul

    circuits.

     

    Provides encryption to the base campus SIPRNet connectivity, i.e., TACLANEs.

     

    Net Architecture/Configuration Management

    Maintains and administers network (voice, video and data) management, planning and circuit

    databases, records and forms.

     

    Interprets sketches and layout drawings for placement of distribution systems.

     

    Reviews, recommends and implements changes to Communications-Computer Systems Installation Records (CSIR), technical data, engineering drawings and equipment wiring diagrams.

     

    Reviews and maintains operational measurement reports and analyzes network utilization.

     

    Ensures equipment and components meet installation practice technical order and accepted commercial installation specifications.

     

    Performs active network monitoring

     

    Communications- Computer Systems Control (Tech Control)

    Operates, monitors, secures and controls the physical, data link, network and transport layers of Communications-Computer Systems (C-CS)

     

    Performs, coordinates, designs, configuration, operation, restoration and improvements.

    Analyzes capabilities and performance, identifies problems, takes corrective action, operates cryptographic equipment and fabricates cable assemblies.

     

    Performs C-CS control facility quality assurance evaluations.

     

    Directs and makes operational adjustments to C-CS equipment.

     

    Ensures links support the transmission of data, for example; electronic mail, voice and video, between organizations.

     

    Maintains and monitors all aspects of the LAN.

     

    Assumes operational control of the wireless network and provides network service and maintenance.

     

    Circuit Management

    Submits Feeder Requests For Service (FRFS) and Web Orders (WOs).

     

    Prepares and submits completion reports (delayed service, exception, ready for use or in-effect report) on the Telecommunications Service Request (TSR), Telecommunications Service Order (TSO) or Status of Acquisition Message (SAM).

     

    Performs Circuit Control Office (CCO) duties.  Maintain paper or automated circuit history folders for all active circuits, trunks and equipment. 

     

    Circuit history folders/files should contain the following documents: 

    o Approval document or cross-reference to source document (AF Form 3215) for

                 the requirement.

    o The Request For Service (RFS), WO, TSR, TSO, circuit demand, SAM and

                 appropriate completion report (e.g., in-effect report, delayed service report,

                 exception report or ready-for-use report).

    o DD Form 1367, Commercial Communication Work Order (if applicable).

    o DD Form 1368, Modified Use of Leased Communication Facilities (if

                 applicable).

    o Switch revision notices (if applicable).

    o Circuit demands (if applicable).

    o R&R documentation or cross-reference to the documentation.

    o DD Form 1697, Circuit Parameter Test Data – Analog.

    o Coordinate with the commercial vendor at least 5 working days before the

                 scheduled service date.

    o Submit an exception report if the vendor installs service that deviates from

                 specifications of the WO/TSR and TSO or the technical parameters of the applicable

                 schedules.

    o Submit the in-effect report.

    o Ensure the final report indicates the installed service meets all details of the

                 WO/TSR and TSO and technical parameters of the specified technical schedule.

    o Clear all delayed service reports and exception reports with an in-effect report

                 after resolving any delays or exceptions.

     

    Follows  applicable environmental guidelines when disposing of hardware or electronic equipment.

     

    Obtains approval using authorized outage requests prior to a scheduled service interruption and informs the government point of contact when service has been restored.

     

    Coordinates with all servicing communications facilities for circuit restoration and fault isolation.

     

    Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

     

    Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. 

     

    Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

     

    EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

    Associates degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related filed, or equivalent combination of education / experience. Experience in providing or supporting installation, configuration, maintenance, and administration of an organization’s local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), network segment, intranet, and/or other data communications system is required.

     

    Experience with Information Technology (IT) concepts, practices and procedures and be

    certified IAW DoD 8570.01-M IAT II and industry standards.

     

    Network Administrator – 9C – Level 3 (required degree + 6 years of experience)

    Network Administrator – 8C – Level 2 (required degree + 4 years of experience)

    Network Administrator – 7C – Level 1 (required degree + 2 years of experience)

     

    CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION

    Must have a Department Of Defense Top Secret Clearance

    CCNA-Security certification or CCNP

     

    JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

    Operational knowledge of computer hardware, systems software and computer network architecture / integration with proven ability to debug complex systems and to conduct reviews, audits and testing

    Knowledge of communication networks including switch / router configuration, firewall configuration, and network security

    Operational knowledge and understanding of multiple label switch paths (MPLS)

    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
