  • Overview

    The Respirator Fit Testing Technician (RFTT) provides administrative and technical support for the Bioenvironmental Engineering Respiratory Protection Program (RPP) and occupational health programs of the U. S. Air Force. This position works closely with the RPP Administrator to ensure the fit test program is implemented in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Air Force Occupational Safety and Health (AFOSH) Standard (Std) 48-137.  

                                                 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

    Performs initial fit testing, and applies fit testing procedures for tight-fitting respirators.  Utilizes the Quantitative Fit Test (QNFT) as a means of assessment to determine the adequacy of respirator fit by numerically measuring the amount of leakage into the respirator.

     

    Schedules and completes annual fit testing in accordance with AFOSH Std 48-137, RPP, prior to the individual wearer becoming overdue for their annual fit test.

     

    Collects, enters, and maintains all data into a database specified by the requesting location.  Completes all Air Force Forms required as part of the RPP.

     

    Utilizes the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System (DOEHRS) for reporting, when applicable.

     

    Maintains a fit testing and training database for tracking purposes.  Works closely with the RPP Administrator to ensure that personnel are scheduled and tracked on a routine basis.

     

    Assists the Administrator in supporting respirator problems, such as poor fitting or improper fitting respirators.

     

    Provides general administrative support such as filing correspondence, scanning incoming and outgoing correspondence into electronics files plan, maintaining both electronic and hard copy files plan, tracking correspondence sent to wing organization, entering data, typing meeting minutes, answering office telephones, and greeting customers.

     

    Completes monthly report that includes work accomplishments, problems encountered, task resources, identification of projected sampling requirements, material kits / parts / assemblies used, and RPP Fit Testing report listing the overall number of personnel enrolled and their corresponding fit testing status (i.e., current, due within 30 days, due within 60 days and overdue for fit testing).

     

    May assist with facility OSHA inspections, Environments, Safety and Occupational Health Compliance Assessment and Management Program (ESOHCAMP) assessments, Nuclear Surety Inspections (NSI), Consolidated Unit Inspection (CUI), and Health Services Inspections (HSI) by preparing and providing the respective inspectors with appropriate documents.

     

    Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.  Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

     

    Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

     

    EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

    Associate of Arts or Science degree with an occupational health implication, and a minimum of two (2) years relevant experience in an occupational health environment are required. 

     

    Government training on the methods, techniques and equipment used to perform respirator fit testing is provided to qualified personnel who meet the educational and experience requirements.

     

    CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION

    Valid driver’s license required for authorized use of government vehicle to transport medical equipment

    Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross

     

    ADDITIONAL JOB SPECIFIC INFORMATION

    This position requires having the following immunizations, with accompanying proof copies of such records, prior to an offer of employment. The responsibility of purchasing these immunizations and/or gathering these records is the responsibility of each interested candidate.

    Practical knowledge of occupational safety and health principles, methods, standards, regulations, policies and procedures applicable to the military or industrial work environment

    Operational knowledge and understanding of respirator fit testing program fundamentals in the occupational environment

    Knowledge and understanding of pertinent governing regulations, procedures, and instructions in the workplace, including OSHA standards

    Knowledge of safe work behaviors with ability to report unsafe working conditions and behavior

    Operational knowledge of standard office practices and procedures

    Proficient in the use of standard office equipment such as computers, typewriters, copiers, fax machines, telephone systems and office automation systems

    Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows and Office programs (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)

    Excellent verbal and written communications skills with ability to prepare a variety of written documents such as correspondence, reports, etc.

    Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of the English language as to professional business grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization in the preparation of correspondence, reports and presentations

    Exceptional customer service skills with ability to adapt communications based on audience, both technical and non-technical

    Proficient in general medical ethics and telephone etiquette with ability to interact, demonstrate tact and communicate effectively at all levels and across diverse cultures in a variety of situations

    Ability to plan, organize, schedule, and coordinate activities such as appointments and meetings

    Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment

     

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

     

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

     

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

     

    SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Work is a combination of sedentary duties as well as light to moderate physical effort.  Requirements include walking, standing, reaching, bending and moving items.  Work is performed indoors in an environment involving everyday risks or discomforts, which require normal safety precautions.  May have exposure to communicable illnesses.

     

    The Respiratory Fit technician frequently is required to lift, carry or otherwise, handle, items weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) with occasional encounters involving items greater than 18 kilograms.

     

    VISION DEMANDS

    Ability to see close (20 inches or less), distance (20 feet or more), color (identify and distinguish), peripheral (up/down and left/right with eyes fixed on given point), depth (distances and spatial relationships) and adjust focus (adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
