The Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) Supervisor for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Academy located at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) is responsible for overseeing and directing the activities of employees providing RPO support. RPOs, also referred to as Ghost Pilots and Pseudo Pilots, operate a combination of the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) / keyboard / Voice Communication System (VCS) during medium and high-fidelity training exercises to simulate the actions and communication of pilots and remote Air Traffic Control (ATC) facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in the development and maintenance of training plans and material to ensure effective and consistent delivery of high quality classroom and lab-based training.
Manages organizational and training data necessary to report metrics and to forecast future requirements.
Performs full supervisory responsibilities in collaboration with other RPO Supervisors. Provides coaching and mentoring. Communicates job expectations, and plans / monitors / appraises job results. Initiates, coordinates, and enforces policies and procedures. Constructively implements disciplinary and corrective action policies, when necessary.
Assigns and communicates staff schedules. Coordinates job assignments, responsibilities and reporting relationships.
Ensures staffing levels / skills are appropriate for the project scope and deliverables. Actively participates in the hiring of new and replacement RPOs.
Ensures accurate and timely time card completion, and approves RPO time cards.
Trains RPOs in how to function effectively as pilots, controllers and adjacent air traffic facilities during simulation exercises.
Operates computer equipment to provide a simulated air traffic environment that reflects typical pilot responses to trainee directions.
Receives voice commands from students, inputs proper entries into the automated system to simulate pilot actions, translates displayed information into appropriate ATC terminology, and responds to the student via the VCS utilizing proper phraseology.
Provides simulated communications to the trainee on a variety of coordination activities with adjacent sector during the course of a lab problem.
Provides scripted communications to the students. Follows prompts to simulate inter/intra coordination related to training problem.
May distribute flight strips to proper training sectors, when necessary, on a time critical basis.
Transcribes required information on remote flight progress strips when necessary.
Monitors student to voice recognition software interaction for errors. Makes corrective keyboard entries, when required.
Follows scenario script to ensure occurrence of timely scenario inputs.
Collaborates with FAA personnel at all levels to ensure delivery of training is responsive to local needs, comprehensive and of consistent high quality.
Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.
Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of two (2) years’ work experience as a RPO. Must demonstrate a minimum keyboard speed of forty (40) wpm with ninety (90) percent accuracy. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION
Must achieve simulation laboratory certification in Terminal radar lab or En Route lab within one hundred twenty (120) days of reporting for duty. If initial certification is anticipated to extend beyond this requirement, a written waiver must be requested from the authorized Contracting Officer (CO) or an authorized representative.
