  • Overview


    The Strategic Communications Lead provides senior level strategic communication support to the Assistant Secretary of Nuclear Energy and Chief of Staff (COS). The purpose of the position is to improve the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy’s (NE) capacity to effectively communicate information, analysis, and reporting to key audiences through multiple mediums, including comprehensive, data-drive websites, monthly reports and alerts, special publications and multimedia products, traditional and social media, and external briefings and events.  It is required to provide the necessary assistance needed for a wide variety of communications and outreach activities, and association information management tasks through DOE systems, procedures, and processes. Activities will include public, media, and stakeholder communications services for various stages of the communications process that support the DOE NE mission and initiatives, and enable public understanding of complex technical, economic, and social issues related to nuclear energy. This support is essential to achieve success in the performance of the NE mission.



    Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

    Sets guidelines for, monitors, and conducts strategic communications tasks, such as public information materials development, media outreach, public relations, multimedia and IT tool development, etc.


    Ensures that plans, materials, tools, events, and other communications products and services support strategic communications goals to achieve the largest impacts.


    Oversees or performs follow-up activities to evaluate the success of strategic communications projects, e.g., reviewing progress toward metrics; and establishes and evaluates lessons-learned and best practices.


    Additional duties: supports the development and assists in the execution of the NE Outreach strategy; Technical Lead, Social Media Management; and Director of NE Video Productions.


    Key responsibilities include:


    • Develop a comprehensive, integrated communications and media strategy including: social media, nuclear industry’s business community outreach, business leader/expert outreach, and traditional and nontraditional media outreach;
    • Create communications messages that cover research projects and subject matter areas of critical importance and impact to nuclear industry participants and businesses.
    • Assess NE’s use of digital media platforms and provide recommendations for digital campaigns.
    • Support NE leaders and decision makers’ engagement and public meetings each year.
    • Provide strategic advice and consultation to NE in developing and effectuating a communications strategy amongst its constituencies.
    • Undertake specific communications tasks related to, but not limited to, high profile issues; enhance the NE’s implementation of an effective communications policy and outreach strategy with the industry, the media; and develop training content and train NE personnel regarding implementation of its communications policy.


    Read, understand, and bring to management’s attention action items by priority


    Gather and synthesize data from various sources to support the decision making process


    Coordinate and support meetings, and arrange travel related to assigned activities and programs


    Collaborate with other communications personnel in DOE HQ to meet the requirements of NE officials


    Follow established department directives and office procedures for the work performed


    Manage extremely difficult and/or complex, highly visible projects


    Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.


    Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. 


    Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.



    Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Advertising, Graphic Design, Event Planning, Business, Information Technology, or other related fields and a minimum four (4) years of relevant experience working in communications or a related field.





    Skilled in SharePoint, Access, Publisher, Visio, Outlook, Canva, Lightroom, basic HTML, and social network analysis.

    Excellent technical writing and editing skills

    Knowledge and ability to support public affairs efforts for NE, reviewing program messages and materials and ensuring all messaging is consistent with the goals of NE, DOE, and the U.S. Government

    Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

    Skilled in facilitating teamwork and coordinating efforts for the successful achievement of goals

    Excellent verbal and written communications skills with solid presentation skills

    Exceptional customer service and relationship-building skills

    Ability to schedule, plan and lead meetings

    Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment




    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.



    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.



    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
