  • Overview

    The Epidemiologist supports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) Influenza Division (ID).This positon designs, plans and initiates epidemiologic studies, surveys and investigations on influenza and non-influenza viruses that cause influenza-like disease

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties maybe assigned.

    Designs, plans and initiates epidemiologic studies, surveys and investigations.

     

    Evaluates data collection, quality control and data utilization methods used to study epidemiological problems and issues.

     

    Evaluates existing surveillance systems to determine if they meet goals and objectives for identifying influenza virus infections.

     

    Uses influenza surveillance data to understand influenza-associated hospital and outpatient burden as well as economic costs.

     

    Assists with correlation and evaluation of control measures during any outbreaks.

     

    Develops and evaluates novel strategies for improving protection among the elderly.

     

    Identifies and troubleshoots problems with data quality (e.g., completeness, transmission, and discrepancies) from a surveillance network to examine the burden of influenza.

     

    Creates and manages laboratory and epidemiology study databases, trains users, and develops manuals to be implemented in sites.

     

    Develops analytic codes for merging and analyzing influenza network surveillance data for statistical analyses. 

     

    Conducts systematic reviews of literature to understand factors that influence influenza-associated hospitalizations among populations of all ages.

    Develops manuscripts and presentations to understand influenza disease burden for internal and external audiences.

     

    Summarizes findings in tables, figures and maps and communicates information.

     

    Generates summary materials regarding methods and results for dissemination during meetings. May schedule and coordinate meetings.

     

    Tracks, monitors and analyzes data on human cases of novel influenza viruses.

     

    Generates and distributes novel influenza virus reports for internal and external partners.

     

    Contributes to the response to novel influenza virus outbreaks domestically and internationally.

     

    Assists partner sites with gathering necessary paperwork to ensure proper compliance with all appropriate and necessary IRB requirements.

     

    May travel locally throughout jurisdiction.

     

    Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.

     

    Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize output.

     

    Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and Human Resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions as the best of own ability.

     

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

    Bachelor’s Degree (M.P.H or M.B.A preferred) in an academic field relating to the health sciences or allied sciences or related fields of study in Biological Sciences and a minimum of five (5) years hands-on experience working in a public health setting.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

     

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

     

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
